Aeronautical engineering is the engineering branch that is primarily concerned with designing and constructing aircraft structures and power units. It also focuses on flight problems in the atmosphere. There are five exceptional aeronautical engineering schools in the United States. These schools are known for their programs, tuition and student satisfaction. All of these factors are important to consider when choosing an aeronautical engineering school.

Embry Riddle Aeronautical University has campuses in Daytona Beach Florida and Prescott Arizona. The Embry Riddle Aeronautical University has been around since just over two decades after the Wright brothers’ first flight. It is an internationally renowned school. The courses offered at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University include the operation, research, manufacturing, engineering, marketing and management of today’s aircraft and the systems that support them. In addition to their two campuses, Embry Riddle Worldwide provides instructional programs in 150 locations throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. It also offers online learning programs.

The Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta Georgia has one of the top rated U.S. aeronautical engineering schools. The university has a large number of students due in part to a more relaxed admission standard. Approximately 60% of the students who apply to the Georgia Institute of Technology gain admittance. The school offers many research areas such as aerodynamics and fluid dynamics, flight mechanisms and controls, aeroelasticity and structural dynamics, structural mechanics and system design and organization. Students who are enrolled in the baccalaureate program at the Georgia Institute of Technology have the choice of spending a semester abroad. They can spend this semester at Oxford University in England, or in Lorraine France. They also offer masters or doctoral programs.

Cambridge Massachusetts is home to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the highest rated U.S. schools for aeronautical engineering, the admission is highly competitive. Only approximately 12% of the students who apply gain admittance. Some of the programs offered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology include aeronautics informatics, aeronautics vehicle design and aeronautics systems. The university offers two under graduate degrees. These degrees are a general Bachelor of Science in aeronautical engineering and a combined engineering and information technology degree. Master’s and doctoral programs in aeronautical engineering are also available.

The United States Air Force Academy offers one of the best known and top rated programs. The program takes longer to complete but is a more cost efficient way of obtaining a degree. Cadets are expected to complete basic training. At the completion of the basic training they are permitted to enrol in their chosen specialization.

The last of the top five aeronautical engineering schools is the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. While this university is top rated and offers an excellent program, it is also one of the most expensive choices. The University of Michigan has had several highly successful graduates over the years.

When choosing an aeronautical engineering school, weigh all factors carefully. Look at what the school offers during your education and also at how the alumni have fared after graduation. Visit each of the schools you are considering and speak with both students and faculty. You can gain knowledge not listed in their information packages.
